Lebanon is a small Middle Eastern country on the eastern shore of the Mediterranean Sea. Beirut, the capital city, was once known as the "Paris of the Middle East." The country earned its reputation from its rich culture, diverse population and its beautiful mountains and sea. However between 1975 and 1990 the country suffered from a destructive civil war provoked by many internal and external factors. Due to the war and subsequent political instability, the Lebanese people face many reconstruction and development challenges. Large disparities exist in parts of the country and many citizens live below the poverty line. Furthermore, the government is often ineffective in implementing laws and protecting its most vulnerable citizens.
