Country Profile

Lebanon is a small Middle Eastern country, bordered on the north and the east by Syria, on the south by Israel and to the west by the Mediterranean Sea.

Prior to the start of the Lebanese Civil War in 1975, Lebanon's capital Beirut was known as the "Paris of the Middle East."  This country earned its reputation from its rich culture, diverse population and its beautiful scenery and proximity to the Sea. Due to the long Lebanese Civil War, which extended from 1975-1990 as well as the ongoing political turmoil, the Lebanese people have much ground to make up with regard to development in the country.

Thanks to the strength and determination of its people; Lebanon seeks to rebuild and develop new opportunities for a diverse and prosperous future. The YMCA-Lebanon is honored to positively impact the lives of the Lebanese people and looks forward to many more years of successful partnerships and progress.
